The Client’s brief was to create a new extension that was sympathetic to the neighbouring properties while providing a modern and bright family dayroom for informal dining and living with a separate snug. It was important to provide a connection between the snug and dayroom so the family would feel linked, even when utilising separate areas of the house.
The space above the double garage is now the new snug accessed by a stair from the dayroom, which provides both a visual connection between the spaces but also a level of separation. By exploiting the angle of the roof for a pitched ceiling, we have created a double height space that links the snug and dayroom and, by including an extensive rooflight over the stair and a glass balustrade, the final result is a large and bright functional family space.

With unspoilt views overlooking the Firth of Forth our Clients were wanting to make the most of their Fife coast location and extend their existing balcony to achieve a panoramic seascape stretching from the Bass rock to the Forth bridges.
The Clients ambition for an American style beach house was a key driver for the design of the balcony and this also led to external renovations to accomplish a complete improvement to the appearance of the house.
The balcony’s elevated position allows full privacy while the glass balustrade allows unobstructed views over the Forth and Edinburgh beyond. By including a fire pit and pagoda the client is able to enjoy this new balcony space throughout the year.
gallowhill cottage, kinross
The Client was looking for a small extension to their traditional cottage in Kinross. They were looking for something modern which incorporated the material timber.
The idea was to have the front elevation completely open to extend the living space out to the garden. When designing the elevations, the wind exposure needed to be taken into account.
The new timber clad extension compliments the traditional cottage form.

The existing house is situated in a corner of large garden and the client really wanted to capture the east view looking over the river forth towards the existing bridges and the new Queensferry Crossing.
The brief was to redesign the rear entrance to create a front entrance, a new dayroom with exterior space and a compilation space with views to the east.
Due to the original traditional style of the house it was decided to form a modern structure with contrasting finish to the existing render. The use of untreated Siberian larch was chosen with the knowledge that this will turn grey and blend into woodland surroundings.
The completed project has connected the new dayroom with the kitchen / dining and the client feels that the combination of all these spaces has enhanced the family gatherings.

The Client wanted to replace an existing cold and dark lean-to with a new well insulated extension to create a new dayroom that would connect to the garden along with an ancillary utility and wc.
The new extension provides a flexible living, dining and kitchen area for the family to enjoy with large sliding doors that allow daylight to spill into the space while also providing access to the garden.
With the monopitch form we were able to create a large internal volume within the new extension that was in proportion to the high ceilings of the existing dining room. We chose to expose the structure of the roof and add large rooflights to maximise the feeling of space and light.
The Client made changes to the landscaping therefore we chose to have long narrow windows to utilise a visual connection between the kitchen and the garden.

The Client was looking to extend their existing split level house to increase their living space and bedrooms and maximise their breathtaking views over the Edinburgh landscape. The Client had a fairly steep garden, half unused, which we needed to be incorporated with a two storey extension and double garage within this challenging landscape.
The living room area was projected out towards the view and we designed a frame in the living room which would capture the image like a painting and allow the space in the room to admire the view.
A new double garage was built into the landscape with a decking area above to maximise the garden space. The Client had a lovely landscape with different levels incorporated into the remaining garden which has allowed the garden to become a relaxing and spacious area.

Our client had previously altered the rear of their house to create a larger kitchen / dining area and the natural progression was to form a new living area into the garden space. To ensure this did not have the feel of an extension bolted to the rear we ran the ceiling level through from the existing house, with a large rooflight and opening glass wall to the garden.
This all ties into the existing kitchen finishes and creates a large chill space that can be used by all the family and friends.

This single storey house was to be designed similarly to its neighbouring house including all the detailing, quoins and massing. Careful detailing was put into the front elevation which was a more traditional stone finish. Beyond this there was more scope to make the house modern including render and timber clad finishes especially to the rear elevation, however this still maintained a traditional feel.
The rear elevation opens itself to amazing views of the bridges and firth of forth and this was taken advantage of with larger areas of glazing. The Client was keen to have as much light into the house, having come from a darker light traditional cottage and therefore several rooflights throughout allowed pools of light to flood in.

Slorach Wood were asked to design a new 2 storey house in place of the former Aberdour Police Station which includes 4 bedrooms and a large open plan kitchen / dining / living which reaches out into the garden space. The design took key elements of the surrounding traditional buildings on the main street and incorporated them into the new modern build.

Single storey dwelling house at Easter Manual Farm, near Linlithgow. Careful consideration had been given to the rural setting and the back drop of the existing farmhouse buildings, whilst internally the client was keen to explore a modern approach.

Client purchased a plot in Aberdour, looking for a modern one and a half storey house with notable consideration to the u-value benefits. With the new plot within a small steading development, the new build was to be in keeping with its surroundings in terms of material and scale. There was more relaxation to the rear elevation of the house which included a timber clad stoop which forms a perfect space for enjoying the weather and housing many of the Client’s beautiful planting.
The main features within the house include a double height space above the living area which enlarges the space and with the large glazed sliding doors, the Client has clear unobstructed view to their garden which is south facing.

The clients' brief was to create a modern, high quality extension. Our aim was to achieve this and to re-organise the rooms within the existing house to reflect the clients' lifestyle.
The design utilises one large open plan space, combining kitchen, dining and family room. Existing floor levels were unified and an intermediate level timber deck joins the garden and house levels.
The kitchen consists of a large island unit with tall storage wall to the rear.

We were asked to convert this traditional Cumbria Cottage into a contemporary holiday home. The brief was to create a home-from-home atmosphere.

A contemporary extension to an existing victorian cottage, creating a large living/dayroom opening into a private garden courtyard.
Our client commissioned us to re-organise and enlarge their existing kitchen and create additional living space for their growing family. Although several alternatives were discussed it was decided that it would be best to leave the kitchen where it was but expand it to encompass the existing utillity space. The utillity space was located within a part of the existing garage and a new extension added on to create an open plan living space directly off the new kitchen. This additional separate living space allowed the family the room to be together or apart as they so wish.

Coxburn Brae is situated in Bridge of Allan, just outside of Stirling. The Clients brief evolved around a simple modern two storey energy efficient house in the sloping garden of their existing home.
The new build uses a new approach to a timber kit and joins the evolution of breathing walls to achieve high u-values and air tightness.
The result is a clean and crisp home at ease in both its setting and function, providing a comfortable home in a build with real kerb appeal. With warmth conveyed through timber detailing this is a home with real character.

Our client commissioned us to create additional living space in their lower ground flat in Bruntsfield Crescent. The only option was to extend the rear of the property. We chose to adopt a timber lined structure in contrast to the existing stone of the property. This also proved an economical solution for the client. Potentially, extending across the rear of the property would have restricted the daylight into the existing kitchen/dining area, to help overcome this we introduced a large roof light at the start of the new extension to allow some daylight into the existing part of the house.

The client had purchased a semi detached house in the Ravelston area of Edinburgh, the house was an original 1930s style and required a full renovation with a modern open plan garden extension with lounge kitchen and dining room, with large patio doors to a garden terrace.

The brief for this extension was to create a large living kitchen area with a lot of light and overlooking the existing garden. The garden gets a lot of sunlight and the thought was to form an outdoor room accessed by a hidden sliding door. The remaining house was fully refurbished with new bathroom, matching oak doors and new skirting’s and facings throughout, giving the feel of a new house.
